Paul 'pvas2' Vas Nunes won the Sunday Million this week. The 28-year-old pro from the UK recorded the win seven years after first winning the event back in 2010. The quality of the performance stands out in the report of the event, which you can read here. After what was a 'wild final table' Nunes got the best of a two-way deal to bank more than $138,000.

We've profiled Nunes before, most recently at the World Series (Howard Swains' interview is well worth reading). Talking to winners always throws light on what it's like to play at this level. Nunes's career earnings of more than $1.5 million make things look easy. But he was candid about the realities of professional poker, both in the work that goes into a result like this, and the rigours of the job.

We spoke to a very tired, but happy Nunes by email shortly after the result on Monday morning. Here's what he had to say.

'In a way final tabling this tournament again felt like redemption,' said Nunes. 'It has been a long time since I had a major cash on PokerStars and in the last 12 to 18 months I've dropped down in the stakes I play considerably, so it was very exciting to get in to this position again. I did have a high level of confidence, since I won the Battle Royale this week and I also didn't recognise many of the players on the table, meaning they probably don't play many high stakes MTTs.'

'Coming in to the final table I was quite card dead or I had borderline hands that might have made me profit in terms of chips but could very easily lose me money to play. Most of the final table there were two or three stacks around my level or shorter and it would have been a disaster to miss out on an easy $10k pay jump because I got greedy, so it was hard to control my feeling of needing to be aggressive to win.'

'I think that I chose my spots well. I focused my aggression on the stacks that had most to lose in calling my all ins, to try to chip up some. Without seeing the hole cards it is difficult to know whether that worked or whether I was just lucky in the hands that they had. I feel I could have tried to get a slightly better deal if I had been pushier or more arrogant in my deal making, but a free $111 is still free money.'

'I try not to advertise my poker results too widely. A lot of my Facebook friends for example aren't in the poker community and are from school or university etc. They wouldn't understand that in order to win this $130k I've actually had to go through huge downswings of similar sizes, so it isn't straight to the Aston Martin dealership.'

'I have an 11-month-old baby girl called Jade and I am looking forward to being able to spoil her and my wife a little bit! It's tough to find the right work/life balance at this point in time because whichever one I do I feel guilty about not doing the other.'

The Unibet Open has announced the first stop of 2020 with a five-day festival in Dublin next February.

This will be Unibet Open’s third visit to the Irish capital – following a record-breaking event in 2018 and the tour’s debut there in 2011. Unibet Open Dublin, which takes place at the Bonnington Hotel, kicks off on February 26, with the €250,000 guarantee Main Event starting on February 27.

The Main Event features a €1,000 + €100 buy-in and there will be three start flights in total – Day 1a, Day 1b and a Day 1c turbo. All players receive a 30,000 starting stack and have a single re-entry option into Day 1c.

As well as the flagship Main Event, other highlights of the festival will include the invitational Unibet Tag Team Championship and Unibet Battle Royale tournament. The schedule also features a two-day €2,200 High Roller starting February 26 with a single re-entry option. Other tournaments on offer include the #QueenRules Ladies Event, Turbo, Hyperturbo and Flip tournaments, a Pot Limit Omaha event, a SuperStack tourney, Progressive Knockout and the popular Unibet Community Freeroll. There is also a new €100 + €10 event on the schedule called the Mini ME which will mirror the Main Event giving players a generous 30,000 starting stack.

How to Qualify Online
There will be plenty of opportunities for players to qualify for the Unibet Open Dublin Main Event online. Satellites are already underway on Unibet Poker with €2,000 packages up for grabs that include the €1,100 Main Event buy-in, four nights’ accommodation at the beautifully-refurbished Bonnington Hotel for qualifier and guest plus €250 towards travel expenses. Unibet Open Dublin history

The last Unibet Open in Dublin was held in 2018 and attracted more than 1,500 entries across the whole festival, with nearly €600,000 awarded in prize money. British player Paul Jux-Holderness defeated a 359-strong field in the Main Event to win a first prize of €74,900 with 47 players paid from the €359,000 prize pool. Jux-Holderness, who hails from Bournemouth, also finished third in the €2,200 High Roller for a further €8,860.

The first Unibet Open Dublin was in 2011 when English poker pro Paul Vas Nunes took down the Main Event for €105,300 after besting a field of 260 players. It was one of Nunes’ earliest recorded cashes and he has since won more than $1.7 million at live poker tournaments.

In addition to the Unibet Open, Unibet is proud to announce that it will also be sponsoring the 2020 Dublin Poker Festival which takes place just before the Unibet Open in mid-February. The festival, which is also at the Bonnington Hotel, kicks off on February 13 with a packed schedule featuring nearly 40 events. Highlights of the 11-day festival include the €570 European Deepstack Main Event and €230 Amateur Championship of Poker. Satellites for both events will be running on Unibet Poker from early January.
